China Becomes First Country to Retrieve Rocks From the Moon’s Far Side

The Chang’e-6 mission’s sample, which might hold clues about the origins of the moon and Earth, is the latest achievement of China’s lunar exploration program.

An image released by the Chinese National Space Administration shows the Chang’e-6 mission’s lander-ascender after it raised a small Chinese flag and before it returned a sample of far-side lunar soil to Earth. The photograph was made by a small rover released by the lander.
