On its own, a Ryobi 4-amp-hour battery without a charger can cost $100, so getting a 4-amp-hour battery, a 2-amp-hour battery, and a charger for $79 is a big discount. The regular price for a 2-amp-hour battery and charger is $89, and you only get one battery with that set. Adding an extra, larger capacity battery and knocking $10 off the total price is a significant savings.

Having a pair of batteries makes using your tools so much easier—you can swap a dead battery out for a fresh one, always leaving one on the charger, so saving money on a pair of batteries makes a lot of practical sense.

Why I like this battery set

The 18-volt Ryobi battery set that I own is used to run a small Ryobi lawn mower as well as a string trimmer under normal circumstances, but I don’t use them every day for shop work—so these batteries were a good candidate to double as a part of my emergency kit. Since there’s almost always one battery fully charged, and usually two, using them with an inverter when the power goes out has been a life saver on more than one occasion.

I’ve used this set during winter storms, and once during a power outage caused by excessive heat. When I put together my wildfire kit, I keep my inverter and a fresh battery in the kit so I can use it for an extra power source on the go. Depending on how many tools you need to use simultaneously, a couple of batteries can go a long way, especially for home and DIY use. A Ryobi battery set can allow you to try out different tools as you build your DIY skills, and expand your tool needs.

Ryobi also has a good track record of making their batteries backwards-compatible to previous systems, so even if you have older Ryobi tools from the early 2000s, you can likely still use them with the current battery system. Why I use these tools

Milwaukee has been making power tools since 1924 when they made their first powered portable drills for Ford. As the battery technology has improved, the tools have become even lighter, more portable, and more practical because of their longer run times.

My personal tool set for home projects and DIY is a Milwaukee set that I began building over 10 years ago. I still have some of the original batteries—and all but one are still going strong. Why solar charging is a good choice

If you’re using a solar charged battery bank in case of a power outage, solar charging allows you to use devices even if there’s no electricity. If you use other types of backup power, like a gas or propane-fueled generator, a solar powered back-up can be a good addition to your kit because in an emergency, there’s the potential that gas and propane will be scarce. When you need a hammer drill

I live in a house that’s over 100 years old, and we have lath and plaster walls that are great for deadening sound and durability, but lousy for trying to hang anything up. A hammer drill ended up being the answer for that, as well as for attaching a metal railing to the concrete walkway at the base of our steps. You will struggle less to get through thicker and tougher material with a hammer drill, especially if you have a lot of holes to drill.

In addition to making you struggle less, the motor on a hammer drill is more powerful, so your drill motor will struggle less too. Since hammer drills are designed for tougher materials, they tend to be powered for more resistance, and can tackle more friction while drilling without burning out your motor.

How a hammer drill works

A hammer drill works by adding impact to the torque function of a regular drill, so it gives you more pressure on your bit. This added momentum gives a periodic boost to the pressure you’re applying to your drill, making it easier to get through tougher and thicker material, especially with a larger-diameter bit. The hammer function can be turned off for drilling into regular materials as well, so this drill can also be used for regular woodworking or DIY projects.
